Moderate Democrats Propose a Different Approach to Iran War Powers
A bold move by a group of centrist Democrats has sparked a debate within the party. On Tuesday, these lawmakers unveiled a war powers resolution that takes a more lenient stance on Iran compared to the one advocated by their party's leadership. The centrist Democrats' resolution aims to address the concerns of some hawkish Democrats who are hesitant to support the existing measure introduced by anti-interventionist representatives Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.). This new proposal offers a different strategy:
- Unlike the Khanna-Massie resolution, which demands an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iran, the centrists' plan provides a 30-day window to end hostilities.
- It prohibits the deployment of ground troops for regime change or occupation but permits a U.S. troop presence for defensive purposes.
The resolution's architects, Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Greg Landsman (D-Ohio), Jim Costa (D-Calif.), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), and Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), believe it strikes a necessary balance. They argue that the Khanna-Massie resolution's immediate withdrawal requirement is risky, especially with Iran targeting American troops. Instead, they propose a safe transition period to protect U.S. service members, embassies, and allies.
But here's where it gets controversial: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and the Democratic leadership are backing the Khanna-Massie measure. When asked about the centrists' alternative, Jeffries focused on the upcoming vote for the original resolution, suggesting that some undecided members might still be swayed.
And this is the part most people miss: the centrists' resolution could be seen as a strategic move to appease both sides. By offering a more moderate approach, they may be attempting to bridge the gap between the anti-interventionists and the hawks. But will it succeed in gaining bipartisan support?
