In a tight-knit environment, Loyola's gym hosted a Class 4A sectional semi-final, and the atmosphere was electric. Fans packed the upper level, creating an intense buzz as DePaul Prep took on New Trier. The boos from the crowd only fueled the fire within Rashaun Porter, a senior forward for DePaul Prep.
"There's an electric energy in away games," Porter shared. "When the crowd is against you, it's like a challenge, and we thrive on that. We may have had our supporters, but the majority were cheering for New Trier."
And thrive they did! DePaul Prep put on an impressive display, dominating the court and securing a decisive 56-38 victory. Porter, a future Toledo recruit, led the way with 16 points and six rebounds, showcasing his talent and potential. His teammate, Rykan Woo, matched his scoring feat, while senior guard Zion Lee contributed 11 points off the bench.
Scott Fricke, coach of the Trevians, praised DePaul Prep's talent. "Our plan was solid, but once the game picked up pace, their ability to make plays became evident. It was a challenging task."
As the third quarter drew to a close, the Trevians, led by junior forward Matthew Logue, managed to narrow the gap to five points. However, DePaul Prep's defense clamped down, holding them scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and entering the fourth with a comfortable 34-22 lead.
AJ Chambers, DePaul Prep's senior point guard, attributed their success to experience. "It was a tense game, and we knew New Trier had some formidable players. But we played as a team, and that unity paid off."
Chambers' impact was felt on both ends of the court. His defensive prowess set the tone, with steals and aggressive plays that led to easy scores. Coach Tom Kleinschmidt emphasized the importance of patience and ball control, which paid dividends with just six turnovers and a solid rebounding advantage over the Trevians.
"We knew the crowd would be against us, but we prepared well," Kleinschmidt said. "Our players executed the game plan, and their athleticism and size gave us an edge."
The near-blowout result surprised many, as most anticipated a closer contest. Porter believes DePaul Prep has yet to reach their peak. "We're not satisfied yet. This performance was a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. We have room for improvement, and I believe we can achieve even greater heights."
