Bold opening: A coaching shake-up hits the Giants just as a new era begins under John Harbaugh, revealing how quickly staff changes can ripple through an organization.
The Giants’ initial coaching reveal for new head coach John Harbaugh has barely settled, and a noticeable adjustment is already on the horizon. Assistant defensive line coach Matt Robinson is departing to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their new defensive backs coach, marking a promotion from an supporting role to a full position coach on Klint Kubiak’s staff.
Robinson, 32, was part of Harbaugh’s inner circle from Baltimore, where he served as the Ravens’ outside linebackers coach last season, before following Harbaugh to the Giants. In New York, his intended path was to work directly with defensive line coach Dennis Johnson, one of the 15 Harbaugh-era hires who crossed over from Baltimore.
During his time with the Ravens, Robinson contributed to a defense that, in 2024, led the league by allowing the fewest rushing yards per game (80.1), the lowest rushing yards per attempt (3.6), and the fewest opponent rushing first downs (69). The unit also ranked No. 2 in sacks (54) and quarterback hits (115). In 2023, Baltimore’s defensive front helped push a league-leading and franchise-record-tying 60 sacks.
Robinson has prior connections to Rob Leonard, who has just taken over as the Raiders’ defensive coordinator. The two previously worked together on Harbaugh’s Ravens staff in 2022. Leonard’s coaching journey includes a previous stint with the Giants, where he served as a defensive assistant from 2013 to 2016 under Tom Coughlin, followed by roles as an assistant defensive line coach and assistant linebackers coach for the Giants in 2017 and 2018 under Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur.
With Robinson’s departure, the Giants now face filling the vacancy on Harbaugh’s staff in the near term. The question looming is who will step into that role and how the team will adapt its defensive coaching structure going forward.
