In the midst of a measles outbreak, NSW Health has launched a new online tool to help parents navigate the complexities of childhood vaccinations. 'Vaccination is the best defense we have against serious diseases like measles,' says Minister for Health Ryan Park. 'With a recent spike in the community, it's crucial that parents are proactive and aware.'
The new tool, accessible at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/myschedule, allows parents to create a customized vaccination schedule based on their child's date of birth. This personalized guide provides practical reminders to ensure timely vaccinations, offering the best protection against serious diseases. Immunization is key to community safety, and this tool is part of the Minns Labor Government's commitment to improving access to care and reducing pressure on the health system.
In NSW, vaccinations are provided for free for a range of serious and highly contagious diseases, including whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox. The immunisation schedule sets out the best age for children to receive these vaccines, carefully chosen by experts to ensure the highest level of protection for each disease. Delaying or missing vaccinations can put children at increased risk of serious disease.
More than 90 per cent of children in NSW are fully immunised, but there's room for improvement. Many parents and carers feel uncertain or overwhelmed when it comes to vaccinating their child, according to research commissioned by NSW Health. To address this, the tool includes a 'add to calendar' feature, which automatically adds a child's vaccination dates to a parent's phone calendar, along with a reminder one week before the vaccination date.
'Delaying vaccines can leave children unprotected during important stages of development,' says Acting Director of Health Protection at NSW Health, Dr Vicky Sheppeard. 'We strongly encourage parents to book their children in at the recommended ages, when the vaccination works best.' Even if a child has a mild cold, it's important not to delay vaccination. 'Talk to your doctor or nurse to make sure your child is protected as early as possible,' Dr Sheppeard advises.
Vaccinations are available from GPs, Aboriginal Medical Services, some local councils, and community health centers. 'This personalized schedule is a great new tool to support parents, helping simplify the process and ensure every child is given their vaccinations on time,' says Minister Park. 'Vaccination means kids are less likely to become seriously unwell and less likely to need to visit our hospitals.'
