Stefon Diggs' Time with the Patriots Comes to an End: A Source Confirms His Release
The New England Patriots are letting go of wide receiver Stefon Diggs, a league source confirmed on Wednesday. This decision comes as the team looks to revamp its offense ahead of the upcoming free agency period. With Diggs' release, the Patriots are freeing up valuable cap space and exploring new options at the wide receiver position.
Diggs, who was signed to a three-year, $69 million contract last March, had a solid season with the Patriots in 2025. He led the team in targets, receptions, and receiving yards, and was a finalist for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award. However, his time with the team was not without controversy.
Following the Patriots' Super Bowl loss in February, Diggs faced legal troubles when he was arraigned on charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery. These charges stem from an alleged incident involving his personal chef in December. Additionally, Diggs' age (he turns 33 in November) and contract situation made him a potential cut candidate for the Patriots.
Despite the controversy, Diggs expressed his hope to return to New England, saying, 'Unless they opt out of the contract, I anticipate being here.' However, the Patriots have other plans, and the release of Diggs will create $16.8 million in cap space, allowing them to pursue other free agents or trade for a top wideout. The team already has several wide receivers under contract for the coming season, including Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism. With the savings from Diggs' release, the Patriots are projected to open free agency with $39.3 million in cap space, giving them flexibility to strengthen their roster in various positions.
